OUT focuses on the key Japanese social and cultural issues of hikikomori (shut-ins), people who feel they cannot leave their homes. This social phenomena, now recognized throughout the world, is thought to affect around 1.5 million Japanese, and has been the subject of many anime, manga, TV series, and academic analyses. As a part of the presentation, Writer/Director Masashi Kawamata and Nicholas R. Zabaly (co-writer/producer) will host an in-depth panel discussion detailing the film’s production process, the unique path toward incorporating international storytelling structure into a Japanese film, and the personal journeys both have taken in becoming filmmakers. The panel will be moderated by Charles Dunbar and Katriel Paige, and will examine the film’s social issues from an academic and cultural perspective, as well as within their narrative contexts.
